Abstract

Adaptive reuse in architecture is an innovative approach that involves transforming heritage buildings for modern functionality while preserving their historical and cultural significance. This study explores the principles, benefits, and challenges of adaptive reuse, emphasizing its role in sustainable urban development. By repurposing existing structures, adaptive reuse extends the lifespan of buildings, reduces environmental impact, and conserves resources, aligning with the goals of sustainability. The integration of modern amenities and sustainable technologies, such as energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources, enhances the functionality and resilience of heritage buildings. This approach requires a delicate balance between preservation and modernization, often involving creative design solutions that respect the building's historical integrity. Additionally, the successful implementation of adaptive reuse depends on effective stakeholder engagement, ensuring that projects align with the values and needs of all involved parties. This study provides insights into best practices and innovative strategies for adaptive reuse, highlighting its potential to create vibrant, multifunctional spaces that contribute to the cultural, social, and environmental sustainability of urban environments. The findings underscore the importance of adaptive reuse as a strategy for sustainable development, offering valuable guidance for architects, planners, and policymakers in transforming heritage buildings to meet contemporary needs.
